Technical architecture for isolating non-deterministic artificial intelligence algorithms behind deterministic hardware-enforced safety gates.
ASTM F3269 defines a tripartite system: the Complex Function (AI agent), the Safety Monitor (formal mathematical barrier), and the Recovery Function (simple deterministic controller).
The safety monitor computes forward invariant boundaries at 100 Hz: if the aircraft's state trajectory projects toward stall speed or structural limits within 2 seconds, switching logic trips and hands authority to the recovery function.
By isolating the AI within an uncertified partition and formally proving the absolute safety of the monitor and recovery functions, manufacturers can achieve airworthiness certification in years rather than decades.
